A few states have developed more stringent CAFO regulations, oftentimes after a significant public health or environmental incident. For instance, Iowa now requires that CAFOs be sited a minimum distance from homes and wells, regulates the construction of manure lagoons, requires that CAFOs submit manure management plans annually, and requires that those handling manure for commercial purposes be licensed by the state and meet certification and education requirements. Wisconsin requires CAFOs to annually analyze the manure they apply to the land to make sure the pollutants are within permissible limits, and they are required to test the land surrounding the CAFO every four years.

Under industrialized animal agriculture it is no longer necessary for humans to feed and water their livestock animals—­it is automated, which renders this former interaction between humans and animals obsolete. Second, intensification occurs. Not only is the land more intensively cultivated for feed, but the amount of meat produced by each animal body is intensified. Animals become bigger faster. Specialization is the third development. Different species of livestock animals are no longer reared together; instead industrialized farms specialize in one type of animal.
