Network externalities (Katz and Shapiro 1985) reflect the dynamic nature of network development and are derived from the welfare changes, broadly independent of the price mechanism, attached to alterations in the number of users. They are likely to be important in shaping the commercial migration to advanced infrastructure and driving the demand for associated services/applications.

Consequently the network becomes central to the efficient functioning of the enterprise, which means that maintenance of the network is of increasing commercial importance.
