The executions began on Tuesday 11 July 1780, and it was on that date that Charlotte Gardiner and Mary Roberts were hanged, along with William McDonald, on a gallows constructed on Tower Hill, the closest open spot to St Catherine’s Lane. On the same day, William Brown was hanged in Bishopsgate Street and William Pateman was hanged in Coleman Street. Other executions followed. On Wednesday 12 July, James Henry was executed on Holborn Hill. That same day, Richard Roberts and Thomas Taplin met their fate in Bow Street.

It was probably nothing but a storm in a teacup so, in early 1766, Mary Clifford was despatched to Elizabeth Brownrigg’s care in Fetter Lane. Less than a year and a half later, Mary Clifford senior returned to London and wished to see her step-daughter who would now be fourteen years old. She knew that Mary junior had been placed with the Brownriggs so, on 12 July, she went to their house and asked to see her step-daughter. To her surprise, the young man who opened the door said that there was no one of that name at the address.

Only then did he see the reason for this unusual brightness; someone had removed four courses of bricks from beneath the window, leaving a large hole through which the sun streamed. Checking his stock, Samuel found that some £200-worth of goods had been stolen. He made a careful list for the authorities. The thieves, whoever they were, had taken 60 yards of linen cloth, ten linen handkerchiefs, 250 yards of lace, 150 yards of edging, 250 yards of black lace, 2,000 yards of silk ribbon, 30 yards of muslin and two silk handkerchiefs.
